Administration Reveals Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Third Week

The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. “Starting next week, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to block the government from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a court official ordered the government to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.

A report argued that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

These terminations took place on the very day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment covering the end of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.
