The Journey of a Movement can be defined by clear stages.

1. The Big Idea

A dominant personality or leaders propose a new and transcendent idea that promises a panacea for disconnected individuals.

What was this thing at first? Just men on a balcony basking in glory. Ink. Forearms. Focus. Elite male wellness energy. Oh sure, The squad often say it’s not a real term, amusingly because if it doesn’t exist, what did we see?

But we know the concept. It’s the batsman attempting a move so depraved it defies description. It’s the adrenaline of the leader at his peak, an expression conveying: focused titan, strong features, hair woven from beaver hide, truly contemporary you half-expect to glance over and find him positioned at mid-off bare-chested and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the batsman still being allowed speaking publicly, resembling a happy little woodland creature smartly dressed, saying stuff like we’re challenging norms. Certainly, the atmosphere, initially, was uplifting.

3. The Growth Phase

Development stage. Cohesion maintained via memorization of key phrases. These beliefs can appear contradictory to prove commitment.

Am I alone? The criticism, the outrage, the disappointment after the first Ashes Test defeat feels overblown, unwarranted. The batting collapsed during the match, as they often do in Australia. Meanwhile, there is the broader context of the opponent’s mixed ingrained annoyance at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, out there saying, the methods you value and have fostered and nurtured as part of your identity from the opposition, well, it’s all a bit of a gag ultimately.

Here lies the truth. Everything is a cult. Bazball was a cult because cricket is a cult. Or at least, the team has long been exclusive, a circle, a private event, an insular community with a long history of opaque and ritualistic cult history behind it. Historically, this was where entry is limited. It’s the colonial game of the nation, the pioneering brand. And notably, the country is a phenomenon, a system of unknown levels, a royal family remains.

The team have been sealed up in this environment from a young age. Attempting to break free, to foster positivity, they are mirroring their upbringing, forming a new circle, an exclusive group, however with a modern squad and a leader encouraging individuality provided you conform.

Live where your feet are. Run towards the danger. Despite efforts, you’re always basically in the same place.
